Water-Wise Plants

Looking for plants that don't use a lot of water?
Our thanks to many local nurseries for providing a list of water-wise plants. You can access the information by downloading the Approved Plant List document at the right. The list is not complete -- many other beautiful water-wise plants flourish in the Bay Area.

Remember that these plants do not need much water, so be careful not to over-water them.

Searching for water-wise plant information and efficient landscaping examples?
The Water-Wise Gardening for Santa Clara County CD-ROM provides a wealth of plant information and landscaping ideas.  This PC software includes hundreds of local garden photos, low water use plant information, an extensive plant list and a water-wise gardening guide.

Where do I find water-wise plants?
There are many nurseries in the Bay Area carry a variety of water-efficient plants appropriate for our climate and have trained staff to help with your questions. Below is a starting list to help you seek out water-wise plants and materials.

Being mindful of water conservation takes place both in the home and out of it. In this case, right out the doorstep and into your garden. Home gardens can often be one of the most taxing sources on our water supply. However, nurseries and public demonstration gardens around the Bay Area offer residents examples of how to be water-wise (also known as xeriscaping) by conserving water and improving local water quality - all while maintaining a beautiful garden.
